With all the media coverage of hybrid cars over the last few weeks, Toyota and Honda have been enjoying plenty of publicity with their environmentally friendly models - but Renault has now fought back in a bid to steal away some of the limelight. The French car manufacturer claims that its equivalent Megane diesels offer a very similar level of fuel economy (and therefore environmental friendliness) to the Japanese hybrids - but without the initial purchase expense.

The Megane dCi 86 and 106 bhp units both share the same CO2 emissions, Vehicle Excise Duty and benefits - whilst offering very similar levels of performance - and AutoeBid has some stunning discounts across the Megane range: prices for the dCi 86 start from about £9700 (saving £3000 on the list price), which works out at almost half the list price of the Toyota Prius - and a £6200 difference on the AutoeBid price for a Prius.
