Audi faced a tough challenge when they set about designing the new A3: how to replicate the same stir in the market that the first A3 caused when it was launched in 1996. Its predecessor had been hailed as a something of a landmark in small car quality but since then cars such as the Volkswagen Golf Mark V and even the Ford Focus have been closing the gap. The result has flung Audi back into pole position with the new A3 sporting a longer, wider and lower stance than the first generation with typically evolutionary Audi styling – whilst reinforcing the same place at the top of the shopping list for the discerning young buyer. Combined with the 5 door “Sportback” model which supplements the range with an additional element of practicality, Audi’s current A3 line-up is formidable.

The A3’s engine range is predictable within the VW group range, but fairly mouth-watering nonetheless. The two most popular engines are the 200bhp 2.0-litre FSI turbo petrol engine that has found its way into the current Golf GTI and a superb 140bhp 2.0-litre TDI diesel which truly excels itself when complemented with the new Dynamic Shift Gearbox (DSG).
