Advantages: Unobtrusive ride quality with adaptable, considered and family-orientated interior layout, well manufactured and presented cabin, good vision, impressive space and storage solutions, stylish, resourceful diesel engines
Disadvantages: Unfulfilling EGS transmission, no stereo in entry level LX, haphazard steering feel, rearmost seats a child only zone, cabin plastics lack tactility
Summary: Pitting its refreshingly alternative MPV wits against the likes of the rule-adhering VW Touran, Ford S-Max and Toyota Verso, the Citroen C4 Grand Picasso shouldn’t be viewed as the joker in the people carrier pack; more of the ace. Clever yet overtly practical use of internal dimensions, resilient diesel power plants and an unswerving safety first, second and third mindset all stack up in Citroen’s favour here.

New CITROEN C4 GRAND PICASSO Review:
There are 13 models in the current Citroen C4 Grand Picasso range, encompassing two petrol and two diesel engines. Chocker with innovative ideas that enhance the otherwise utilitarian and therefore limited pleasures of people carrier ownership, the C4 Grand Picasso dares to be different.
Flat folding rear seats, a panoramic front window, cunning storage solutions and boot light-cum-torch piece of ingenuity being evidence to support this claim. But then this is what Citroen does best, having carved out its automotive history from some of the quirkiest, inspired blocks imaginable.
Another Citroen safe bet is affirmation that you’ll be seated comfortably for the duration of the trip, whilst the package as a whole will represent great value for money. Safety will also be well stared too. whilst other manufacturers’ MPV mantras seem to share more in common with the supermarket ethos of ‘pile ‘em high (in terms of people wedging) and sell ‘em cheap’ (ish) Citroen’s approach has always been a bit more considered, along with more laterally thought policies.
The 118bhp and 148bhp 1.6-litre petrol units in fairness seem under-powered for the job in hand and subsequently become dehydrated quicker than the far more torquey oil-burners. Although only available in either 110bhp 1.6-litre and 138bhp 2.0-litre forms themselves, both diesels offer improved economy (around 45mpg) and better results all round. Four trim levels – the LX, SX, VTR+ and Exclusive – offer some degree of creature comforts for everyone’s demands (and pockets), excepting the former which is a let down.
The C4 Grand Picasso is an assured, sure-footed mover when making light of A-road surface indescretions and motorway travails, yet around the cityscape it struggles and feels thwarted through the lower gears. It also has an aversion to ridges in the tarmac and the more acute of corners, however stays relatively planted despite its leaning tendencies.
We found that although the featherweight steering held its nerve for parking duties, it provided little feedback elsewhere, whilst the dash-mounted gear changes in the manual C4 Grand Picasso was all over the shop. We would suggest the optional electronic paddle shift would be in your best interests, but electing to change gear by hand and so avoiding the EGS assimilation which appears to have a mind of its own.
With integrated safety aspects being paramount in a people carrier, buyers of the Citroen C4 Grand Picasso can rest assured that everything is in place on that (twin) front. And if you’re referring to airbags in particular, they’re also located in the vehicle’s side, window bottom and in close proximity to the driver’s kneecaps too. All angles being very much covered for all eventualities. Elsewhere and Stability Control adds extra peace of mind.
As for the general ambience of the insides, and it’s leftfield business as usual for the French auto maker, with a fixed steering wheel hub, instrumentation centrally configured and air-con controls where you’d least expect them to up the unconventional quota. That said, practicality counters the unexpected care of foolproof switchgear, great driving positions and maximum vision encouraging glass dimensions, rake and contours.
Five ordinarily-sized adult folk can be seated with elbow room and comfort across three rows – the trio of middle chairs slide back and forth to suit occupant/load priorities – although the last row is somewhere grown-ups enter at their peril.
In terms of equipment, the base LX model is a none starter for us, as there’s no provisions for a CD player or air-con. Join the Citroen C4 Grand Picasso club at SX level and at least you’ll bag electric front windows and cruise, while the VTR+ adds alloys and magical ‘auto up/down’ rear windows to the equation. Best plump for the range-topping Exclusive if you dream of such fripperies as climate et al.
