Advantages: Value for money and fuel efficiency, especially the Blue Drive Model, ensures that eco-credentials are safely assured. The stylish looks and rear passenger door that offers easy access is also a benefit, and as with all Hyundai’s the interior build quality even on the standard model ensures that there are many gizmos and gadgets at your fingertips.

Disadvantages: The level of driving engagement for many coupe drivers may be limited, as will the cramped rear or a real sporty version.

Summary: The new Hyundai’s Veloster feels like a valiant effort that hasn’t been 100% successful: The quirky, sleek appearance will turn some heads. The new Hyundai Veloster is a game of two halves... The Veloster’s appearance is sleek and stylish three-door layout (two doors on the passenger side and one on the driver’s side) might be quirky but feels somehow unbalanced.

Coupe buyers want an entertaining drive but on the open road the Veloster is hardly earth-shattering and might feel a little too much like style over substance. There is only one engine type available, which again could feel a touch limiting.

In line with current Hyundai models the interior of the Veloster is designed well and there is a good array of equipment even on the standard model. Ultimately however the Veloster may be found wanting owing to its its not-so engaging driving experience especially when compared to the rivals in this market such as the Vauxhall Astra GTC.

Where the Veloster truly comes into its own is pricing and fuel economy. How many coupes have a price tag of under £20,000 with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty? Euro NCAP also awarded the Veloster five stars making it one of the safest coupes on the road.

If you’re on a tight budget and willing to accept the compromises and design quirks of the Veloster, then perhaps this is the coupe for you.
