LEXUS background and news
Lexus is the luxury vehicle division of Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation.

Launched in 1989, Lexus introduced a wealth of high-quality imagery, a fine build quality, first-rate chassis dynamics and positive solutions.

Lexus has ranked as the highest-selling maker of luxury cars.

In 2005, the division launched in Japan and became the first Japanese luxury car brand to be introduced in its home market.

Lexus has been the most successful attempt to meet the prestige expectations of the North American buyer, allied to European design ethics, but with the reliability and efficiency of a Japanese motor vehicle.

The name Lexus has no specific meaning but simply denotes a luxurious and technological image.

The saloon LS was the first vehicle to wear the Lexus. In the following years, Lexus added saloon, coupe, convertible, and SUV models.

Lexus has also been very tuned to security and comfort features.

Its models showcase a very high level of technology on board alongside safety features ranging from stability systems, to backup cameras, swivel headlights, and sonar warning systems.

The Lexus Pre-Collision System integrates multiple safety systems. Lexus introduced the first car safety systems with infra-red and pedestrian detection capabilities, lane keep assist, a Driver Monitoring System with facial recognition monitoring of driver attentiveness, and rear pre-collision whiplash protection.

GREEN CREDENTIALS The company has always kept ahead of competitors in hybrid technology. In 2005, it launched the first production hybrid luxury SUV, the RX 400h.

The vehicle used a Lexus Hybrid Drive system that combined gasoline and electric motors for increased power, fuel efficiency, and lower emissions relative to gasoline-only equivalents.

In 2006, it unveiled the GS 450h, a V6 hybrid performance saloon. That same year, the brand premiered the fourth generation flagship LS series and hybrid versions.

The three best sellers of the range, the GS, the RX and the LS are available in hybrid versions. The Lexus range also included a sport car and a convertible, the very impressive IS-F, and the luxurious SC430.

As a subsidiary of Toyota, Lexus benefits from the research and development of its parent company, especially in light of Toyota’s successes in hybrid and fuel-cell technologies.

This will be seen in the new Lexus LS600h – which produces power to match a 6.0 litre V12 with 444bhp and actually only emits 219g/km and achieves 30mpg.

Comparatively the V12 Mercedes S600 produces 340g/km. Lexus currently offers more hybrid cars than Toyota or any other manufacturer and has more in the pipeline.

Lexus also has a forthcoming sports coupe codenamed the LF-A which would adopt a hybrid engine currently in development for the Toyota FT-HS sports car.
