Advantages: Well, two more cribs for starters, snug (cotton wool protection) ride quality, a host of extras as standard, mightily refined for a hefty MPV, excellent construction
Disadvantages: Two extra seats shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg more than five, access to additional rear seats disappointing (unless you’re an adult in the making), pricey to keep on the road, safety shortfalls
Summary: Another one of those marketing exercises in conning the MPV and SUV-buying public into thinking their ‘lifestyles’ demand a stretched version of what they already drive, or a versatile and viable solution to the outgrown MPV/SUV problem brought about by the burgeoning family? Always a bone of contention this, but by and large it seems Nissan has come up trumps by offering a practical, adaptable vehicle that will see baby boomers through the next stage in their car journey. Just hope that they don’t shoot up too quickly though or the +2 aspect will be surplus to requirement before you know it.

“We are really pleased overall with our 1.5dci QQ+2. Fuel economy is amazing, computer said 44mpg over a weeks holiday to the south coast. I checked it on refill and it was 48mpg! Just dont expect it to be a ball of fire to drive, its a tad slow. But how fast can you go these days anyway. there's a slight flat spot in 3rd at just under 2000rpm hopefully dealer can fix this. Quality is very good, 3rd row seats are ok for kids on short journeys. ”

New NISSAN QASHQAIPLUS2 Review:
On the surface the Qashqai+2 is just an automotive extension of the Qashqai-2 there’s no escaping it, standing side by side the former is 211mm longer. Yet on second glance you note that it’s the wheelbase that’s borne the brunt of the stretching rack, and not simply the elongating of the rear overhang.
For some reason this has added 38mm to the height of the Qashqai+2, whilst the front and rear doors appear larger too, all to accommodate the extra chairs. A new grille and a re-interpreted rear bumper signal the only readily noticeable exterior revisions over its donor vehicle.
Stopping short – by approximately 1 full adult chair – of calling the Nissan Qashqai+2 a fully paid up member of the seven-seater community, the Japanese car maker is looking to build on the impressive in-roads it has thus far made in the SUV-cum-MPV ‘compact crossover’ sector with the strictly five-seater Qashqai. And it’s done this for good reason.
And that’s because with the exception of the type of circus performer who gets fired out of a canon, grown-ups shouldn’t entertain the rear-most stalls whatsoever. With a recommended 1.6 metre maximum height suggestion loosely imposed for anyone considering baggsying the ‘+2’ seating area, it would be prudent in the interests of your head, knees and elbows to heed this brochure small print.
Still, rather handily the latter-most bench seats prove their worth when – via a deft push button folding mechanism – they crawl back into the floor work and offend no one, whilst freeing up an additional 140-litres of luggage space over the previously unfettled Qashqai.
Besides the two unimpressed adults – or happy go lucky kids – wedged in the Gods, elbow-room for all other occupants is well starred. And speaking of stars, the Qashqai+2 houses the largest, longest roof auditorium on the market according to Nissan’s men in white coats, a humongous panoramic roof that opens up the entire vehicle, flooding it with light and airiness day or night. And this appears not to be a stretching of the truth in any way, shape or form.
A classy interior spread, the Qashqai+2 is geared up toward the driver, with a simplicity and ergonomic flow that belies the segment in which it finds itself. Hewn from premium quality materials and fabrics, the all-important controls are laid out bare within the steering wheel’s circumference.
A good choice of engines are on offer to equip a far-reaching model range, rely on two petrols and two diesels to get things under way. A 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre (115bhp and 140bhp respectively) petrol goes up against a 106bhp 1.5-litre and 150bhp 2.0-litre oil burner just for the record. Five-speed manual, six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmissions can be amalgamated to all power plants dependent on the spec.
You even get to decide if you want your Qashqai+2 in two wheel drive or four, which in themselves offer a triumvirate of settings in which to play; always on, always off or auto, which relieves the driver of the decision making process and employs 4WD when it sees fit.
A broad spectrum of performance, economising and planetary damage reflect the differing models individual priorities, with anything from 10.5 to 13.3 seconds the acknowledged 62mph threshold, fuel economy improvising between 32.8 and 49.6mpg and CO2 emissions noted anywhere betwixt 165g/km and 209g/km. which facts all contribute to tell their own tales.
The Qashqai+2 rides every bit as accomplished and unshakably as its smaller sibling, but we discovered the auto box made us feel overwhelmingly detached from the driving experience and would concur that the manual shift is the more rewarding drive out on the roads. No quibbles with the comfort zones – of which they were omnipresent (less the +2 seats) – and the rudimentary kit list is equally as impressive.
Visia, Acenta and Tekna conspire to make up the three trim levels you can spec on the Qashqai+2, taking your pick from any of the following toys being factory fresh, ranging upwards from; air-con, alloys, CD player, rear privacy glass, panoramic sunshine roof, parking sensors, cruise, automatic headlamps and wipers, heated leather and keyless entry.
Safety features run to six airbags, ABS, brake assist, EBD and ESP, yet stability control is only an option on the base model and the curtain airbags per se don’t extend their coverage to serve and protect those rear-seat passengers.
