Advantages: Hip to be square with lines so sharp you could slice your fingers clean off, drives as sweet as a nut, agile, nimble, and rev-addled, keenly priced, peerless TSI engines.
Disadvantages: Rear seats a no-go zone unless you’re vertically challenged, boot space that caters for a wash bag at most, slightly nondescript interior.
Summary: Impeccable driving manners, virtually no body roll, accurate and touch-sensitive steering responses and the most obedient engine seen in this class of car, the new VW Scirocco has finally thrown its timelessly stylish coupe hat right back in the ring. Complete with an Adaptive Chassis Control system akin to ones belonging to the Audi TT, R8 and Ferrari 599, sensors are asked to monitor and continually adjust the Scirocco’s braking, cornering and acceleration abilities in an instant. Tightening up the ride, sharpening throttle response and steering the Comfort, Normal and Sport modes do exactly what the driver ask of it; however before that – and rather wilfully – you can tease the Scirocco’s back end to twitch in to those tight hairpins and apexs’, just ahead of the ESP stepping in. If ever a blast from the past should be embraced for the future then the new VW Scirocco is the car to reacquaint yourself with on all levels.
New VOLKSWAGEN SCIROCCO Review:
Strong, predominantly warm air currents originating from dry and arid desert areas are referred to as a sirocco - although often spelt Scirocco - and signal winds of far-reaching climatical change lies ahead. There, that’s the geography lesson concluded for today. So, you might be thinking what’s this have to do with the latest Volkswagen coupe and you’d be right to question where we’re going with this, but trust us, you’ll like it. You see the intro serves as the perfect metaphor for the timely introduction of one of VW’s most iconic models, namely the recently reborn Scirocco.
In a succeeding time of at best luke warm, at worst, tepid coupes, what you hear whistling and see brewing on the distant horizon is indeed a breathe of very temperate air with moist patches forecast.
From 1974 through to 1992 the Volkswagen Scirocco in its two different outfits represented the German car manufacturer’s frivolous side in a way even the charismatic Golf GTi couldn’t, despite the fact that under its petticoat it brandished the same mechanical bits and bobs. Unceremoniously dumped in the early 1990s to make way for the more robust, sharply angled and altogether rakish lookingVW Corrado, the MkII Scirocco was from that point thought to have been consigned to the pantheons of automotive history for an eternity.
However the Corrado itself was somewhat cruelly many would say, cut down in its prime only three years after its release in 1995, with the motoring press citing a high price tag coupled with the fact that the sports car buying public didn’t relate to the VW brand as the catalyst for its incredibly short life cycle and sudden demise.
But that was then and this is now, and with speculation rife in the automotive media that Volkswagen was preparing a new generation of two door coupes, 2008 was awash with rumours that it would arrive under the resurrected Scirocco moniker rather than the Corrado.
To avoid any confusion the new VW Scirocco is by and large a Golf GTi coupe and for once the Germans aren’t trying to kid us otherwise. So for a start it scores a 9.8, 9.7, 9.9 and 9.7 for artistic direction, technical ability, choreographed performance and physical interpretation respectively. And engineering-wise suffice to say a whole new points system would have to be invented with Scirocco being newly adopted slang for extraordinarily unassailable or something equally preposterous.
Before we go any further though, we have to admit our disappointment with Volkswagen for not biting the bullet and sticking hard and fast to the IROC concept car – and new Scirocco inspiration – first drooled over in 2006. With a mouth every bit as sinister as the Mitsu Evo X, the swollen rear haunches of a Porsche 911 and the air of Satan himself about it, the IROC never really stood a chance we guess.
Frameless windows, bulbous hind quarters, Vee-Dub’s new, lithe corporate snout, a neat derriere and an enticingly svelte profile and any elevation outline make the Scirocco picture perfect in the eyes of even the hardest to please.
But anyway, what of the reborn Scirocco’s ability you ask, so here’s the deal. Well it turns on its head the longstanding notion that the only reason some saw for purchasing the Scirocco over the Golf was purely as a concession to style statement-making. And that’s because the Scirocco is only £90 more than the Golf this time round. And even though it shares the same building and 2.0-litre TSI petroleum distilling blocks, the coupe emits less carbon dioxide out of its backside than its hatchback sibling, thus falling into a lower tax band, rendering the usual economics arguments none negotiable.
A six-speed semi-automatic DSG flappy-paddle, multi-adjustable suspension, a bespoke Scirocco nerve centre that computes as much information as Doc Brown’s time-travelling DeLorean keeping you constantly updated, electronic stability control and massive brake shoes allow the driver more than enough amateur dramatic to be played out, stopping some way short of dropping the final curtain on your act. Or activating the front head restraints that all but eradicate whiplash injuries and the front, side and curtain airbags that are all found as standard.
With the 0 – 62mph sprint administered in 7.1 seconds, the 2.0-litre TSI GT will be having a little chat with itself all the way up to 145mph, whilst acknowledging 207lb/ft of torque at around the 1700rpm mark for good measure. This top-ranging new Scirocco is £19K or thereabouts, as £17,446 secures you the entry level 1.4-litre TSI version.
There are four models from which to choose so far, two petrol and a brace of oil burners, which although distressing the puritans we can report are finely fettled in their own right.
And although the 158bhp 1.4-litre TSI petrol might not sound like it will set the world alight, believe us it’ll leave scorch marks in your undercrackers thanks to its power-crazed – if not subtle – blend of acute supercharging and promiscuous turbocharging, especially when bearing in mind it causes less damage to the scales than one Posh Spice. The bonkers revving of all models will help etch-a-sketch a ludicrous smile across the most poker-faced driver as soon as they depress the loud pedal that much is assured.
The new Scirocco is as low slung as its ancestors, sitting 97mm lower than a Golf; so it helps if you list contortionist as occupation on your CV to alleviate the versatility issues of entry and exit if nothing else.
With regards to running costs and perceived depreciation, it’s a mixed bag. Resale values we envisage will hold well, but fuel consumption will suffer if you’re heavy on the accelerator 24/7. That said, if you proceed with all the due care and attention that the Highway Code suggests, then the 1.4-litre will return 43mpg and the 2.0-litre will manage 37mpg.
The Scirocco’s build quality echoes the exacting detail that makes VW’s the stuff of automotive legend, with just about every inch of the coupe looking, feeling, sounding and smelling solid and resolute and being able to sustain the rigours of an Ice Age. Triangular door handles, touch-screen control, tactile switchgear, meshed weave figure-hugging front sports seats and a chunky leather-wrapped flat-bottomed steering wheel harnesses the overtly sporting ambience effortlessly captured by the new Scirocco.
Elsewhere, onboard toys include ‘leccy mirrors and windows, CD player, dual zone climate, sports suspension and 18” alloys as standard with options covering a panoramic sunshine roof, leather trim, 19” rims and touch-screen sat nav.
We can doubtless imagine that the competition will be doing rain dances so as to dampen the Scirocco’s spirits when learning just how much of a punch this coupe packs.
