“Four Stars. Originally we were looking at the XC60 as my wife was pregnant with our third child. Turns out it was twins and XC90 was the only car capable of carrying all of us and the paraphernalia that goes with a large family. Car doing everything that we ask of it and so far we are well pleased. I expect that Volvo will launch a new model in the next 24 months with hopefully better fuel economy than the 27mpg we are getting now. On motor way runs fully laden we are getting 32mpg which when you consider public transport costs for all six of us then it's a no brainer. ”

“Three stars is about right (out of 5) - 28mpg is disappointing for a 2.4 litre diesel engine linked to a 6 speed auto gearbox - and that is careful driving. Needs a larger fuel tank. The GPS should accept updates via mobile phone and bluetooth and not rely on new CD's every blue moon. The screen and functionality are not that good. The radio and phone controls are awkward and confusing and only allows one phone bluetooth link at a time. The car is a comfortable cruiser, but needs bringing up to date with more eco friendly technologies - e.g. bluemotion. I like the high driving position, especially in France, but handling is a bit sloppy and does not feel great with a tow bar bike carrier attached - very twitchy steering (too light, not enough feel). It should have front and rear parking sensors, not just rear ones for the price. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with this car - very mixed feelings. i don't think I wold buy another one and won't hang on to this one if it proves expensive to run. Maybe love will grow with time!”

New VOLVO XC90 Review:

The XC90 is the epitomy of the "lifestyle" 4x4: not particularly accomplished off-road, but very much at home on the tarmac. It's designed to appeal to the family buyer who is looking for a prestige off-roader which will offer the level of practicality of an estate, a high level of safety and that extra degree of comfort. And all the while this Volvo oozes class without falling into the trap of becoming ostentatious, like many of its rivals.

The chassis is sturdy and provides good safety, although it doesn't translate into a particularly involving or sporty drive - and the emphasis is on comfort and refinement, the XC90's principal strength. Fitted with seven seats as standard (which fold flat into the floor), the Volvo represents excellent value for money with a generous level of specification and plenty of space. Residuals are strong across the range, particularly for the popular D5 engine, and discounts for UK dealer supplied cars through the reverse auction make the Volvo an even better buy with possible savings of several thousand pounds.
