LAND ROVER background and news
Land Rover is a 4x4, SUV and all-terrain vehicle manufacturer, based in Solihull, West Midlands, England.
Originally the term Land Rover referred to one specific vehicle, a pioneering civilian all-terrain utility vehicle launched on 30 April 1948, but was later used as a brand for several distinct models, all capable of four-wheel drive.
Land Rover is considered as a British icon in the motoring scene.
It is one of the longest surviving four-wheel drive brands, coming in a close second to Jeep.
Land Rover was originally just one crude vehicle - an all-terrain, utility machine, styled after a military vehicle, but aimed at post-war civilian use.
The first Land Rover was designed in 1948 in the United Kingdom by Maurice Wilks, chief designer at the British car company Rover on his farm in Newborough, Anglesey.
The Land Rover brand developed its range of four-wheel drive under a succession of owners, including BMW. In 2000, the company was sold by BMW to the Ford Motor Company. In June 2008, Land Rover operations were sold to Tata Motors.
Land Rover’s vehicles are well known for having a reputation for longevity and reliability in the toughest conditions.
Land Rover once advertised that 75 per cent of all vehicles ever built are still in use.
The early choice of colour was dictated by military surplus supplies of aircraft cockpit paint, so early vehicles only came in various shades of light green.
Land Rover has modernised its range today.
These new four-wheel-drive are getting more and more good-looking and pleasant to drive.
There are four models available with the flagship of the brand being the Defender due to its military history in the brand.
Then there is the Range Rover, the very impressive and luxurious SUV with the following two being the more conventional Freelander and Discovery.
GREEN CREDENTIALS Land Rover tries to reduce its vehicle emissions.
Indeed, it has presented in the 2008 London Motor Show its new ERAD diesel-electric hybrid in a pair of Freelander 2 prototypes.
The new hybrid system is being designed as a scalable and modular system that could be applied across a variety of Land Rover models.
Besides, Land Rover unveiled the LRX hybrid concept at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, for it to be going into production.
The maker is working hard to reduce and prevent pollution, conserve resources, minimize waste and implement efficient manufacturing processes at its factory.
They are developing models that will be significantly lighter, dramatically improving their efficiency and they are also planning a hybrid version of the new Freelander.
Land Rover has also offered to counter criticisms of its current range Land Rover by launching a carbon offset programme to neutralise its manufacturing carbon dioxide emissions.
UK legislation now states that all manufacturers must take back vehicles they produce from now on when they reach the end of their life to ensure they are disposed of in an ecologically-friendly manner, and Land Rover has already begun doing this.
