The Viano combines practicality with a classy badge as Mercedes' only real load-lugging MPV, but it falls rather short of the superb standards of new Merc ranges such as the B- and R-Class which are so beautifully finished and feel every bit the Mercedes of old. The Viano is far more utilitarian in its appearance - and feels like it on the road - but its van origins stand it in good stead for people-moving duties and general day-to-day flexibility. The 2.2 diesel engine offers the best blend of economy and power, with surprisingly frugal fuel consumption and sufficient refinement to make motorway journeys relaxed and painless.
