The Touareg is VW's first foray into the luxury 4x4 market - and it's an impressive start. The Volkswagen shares the same underpinnings as Porsche's Cayenne, which is evident from the massive proportions of both cars, but the Touareg makes up for its inferior brand image with a stylish design and wonderful drive. The engines are simply superb: from the outrageously powerful (and expensive) V10 TDI to the 2.5 TDI, which is the pick of the crop. They link in to a well-balanced chassis that defies its size with nimble handling and enough electronic gadgetry to confuse even the most technologically gifted driver. Either way, it's refined on-road and very capable off-piste: the permanent four-wheel-drive system puts the Touareg on par with the likes of the Land Rover Discovery and even Range Rover for off-road ability. The cabin is beautifully put together as one would expect - and the Volkswagen should prove to be a good long-term bet for reliability and residual values. What's more, discounts in the reverse auction are excellent for brand new UK cars.
