Renault Clio dCi 90 – Save £1,469
Another member of the French revival is the fourth-generation Clio, and in particular the dCi 90. Combined with the new car’s polarizing looks, a 90bhp 1.5-litre engine, 83mpg and CO2 emissions of 83g/km (for the Eco model) make the Clio a strong competitor. Opt for the ‘Dynamique’ trim and you’ll get the MediaNav touch-screen system, too.
Inside, there are plenty of personalization options, and the dashboard, seat and door trim can all be jazzed-up—even in bright red, whilst the exterior now features daytime running LEDs, and a low, squat stance.
Ford Fiesta ECOnetic 1.6 TDCi – Save £2,292
Whilst Ford’s latest EcoBoost engines are certainly more fun, if you really want low emissions and high fuel economy then the ECOnetic Fiesta is the one to go for. Combined economy is an incredible 85mpg and CO2 emissions just 87g/km. The Fiesta has recently received Ford’s ‘One Ford’ design language, too, including the Aston Martin-inspired grille and daytime running LEDs inside the headlights.
Like all Fiesta models, the ECOnetic steers accurately and is well setup for unpredictable British roads. Although the ECOnetic 1.6 TDCi is the cleanest, however, the 1.0 EcoBoost model is well worth a drive.
Kia Rio 1.1 CRDi EcoDynamics - Save £852
So the little Rio isn’t as fun to drive as a Ford Fiesta, nor does it possess the prestige of Volkswagen’s all-conquering Polo, but clad with Kia’s new car design language and an incredibly frugal engine it’s a tempting option at an aggressive price.
The range starts with the ‘1’, which emits just 85g/km CO2, but a more luxurious ‘2’ is also available. Emissions for the ‘2’ jump to a still impressive 99g/km. Stop/start and low rolling restistance tyres contribute to these figures, but the real reason for them is the tiny 3-cyclinder turbodiesel under the bonnet. Utilitarian, but brilliant.
Fiat 500 TwinAir – Save £992
Believe it or not, the reinvented 500 is now an old car. Released in 2007, however, Fiat’s charming homage to the original has received various updates--one being the addition of a two-cylinder ‘TwinAir’ engine. Sub-100g/km CO2 emissions, bags of torque and an engine note to make anyone smile make the TwinAir-equipped 500 the one to go for.
Power is 84bhp, which doesn’t sound like a lot but feels swift enough in the 500, and the 875cc engine also returns excellent urban fuel economy. Available in cabriolet form, too, it makes the perfect runaround if most of your driving covers municipal routes.
Peugeot 208 1.4 e-HDI – Save £897
After the chunky 207, the 208 sees a radical return to form for Peugeot, and not a moment too soon. A beautiful design and weight savings of more than 100kg over the 207 mean that the 208 is better to look at, better equipped and much cheaper to run than its predecessor. A combined fuel economy of 83mpg is also near the top of the class.
Whilst popular, the 208 is also a something of an atypical choice, with reimagined interior ergonomics including a tiny steering wheel and linear instrument binnacle mounted high on the dashboard. Peugeot have also endeavored to use as much recycled polymer in the 208 as possible.
