Hoping to full in the footsteps of the successful Volvo XC90, the S90 uses the same range of four-cylinder engines, a similar styled interior, based on on the same chassis technology and is placed on the same Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform.
However, the exterior doesn't take as much inspiration from the XC90 though, with the recognisable Volvo grille fitted in a more upright position.
Volvo's new S90 follows on from the S80 saloon, of which it is longer and wider than. The Swedish company says that the S90 will have plenty of room at the front to allow for adjustments. There will also be extra comfort for the taller drivers, and passengers in the rear.
The S90 will be equipped with an advanced semi-autonomous drive feature, Pilot Assist. The system will provide gentle steering inputs in order to keep the car properly aligned within lane marking while no longer needing to follow another car.
This has been a particular point of interest for Volvo, who say that Pilot Assist is another step towards autonomous driver which is a key innovation area for the car manufacturer.
Alongside the usual advanced safety software such as self-parking, 360 degree camera system and pedestrian detection that comes with most modern Volvos, there will be some new technology making its debut on the S90. Drivers will be able to take advantage of Large Animal Detection, which will automatically activate the brakes if a collision with a horse or deer is impending.
