Nissan Qashqai

2014 Nissan Qashqai Deals

Updating the Nissan Qashqai – a car that led the trend for now ubiquitous crossover SUVs – is no easy task. That's why Nissan has more or less stuck to the same formula as the original 2007 car, but with improvements in refinement, space, and a sharp new design. Prices for the 2014 Nissan Qashqai will start at £17,595 when the car goes on sale in February and there will even be the option of a 74.3mpg 1.5-litre diesel model with carbon dioxide emissions rated at just 99g/km. The engine range starts with a 1.2-litre turbodiesel, although a stronger 1.6-litre turbodiesel will also be available. Prices top out at £27,845.

Marginally longer, wider and taller than the outgoing model, Nissan has raised the bar for practicality and occupant comfort, but as a result the new Qashqai will now feel every inch its size on tighter urban routes. Nissan will, however, offer park assist so that the Qashqai can automatically park itself. Top spec 'Tekna' models will come with 19-inch alloy wheels, bi-LED headlights, full leather seats and a host of safety equipment.

Honda Civic Tourer

2014 Honda Civic Tourer Deals

First deliveries for the new 2014 Honda Civic Tourer begin in February, and the new car promises efficient yet reasonably powerful engines to go with its more athletic design. While a 150bhp 1.8-litre i-VTEC petrol engine will be offered, most buyers will likely opt for the 1.6-litre diesel that returns 99g/km of CO2 and 74.3mpg, giving it a range of 817 miles, says Honda. Prices start from £20,265 for the 1.6-litre diesel in standard 'S' trim and rise to £26,250 for the top-spec 'EX Plus' trim, which comes with keyless entry, ambient lighting and bi-HID headlights. A driver assistance pack, including active city braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and blind spot monitor will be available for £780.

The new Civic Tourer will also boast best-in-class luggage capacity (with the tonneau in place) while adaptive dampers at the back should give it high ride quality on the UK's eclectic range of road surfaces. Big, refined, frugal and, to many eyes, attractive, the 2014 Honda Civic Tourer is expected to sell well.

Citroen Grand C4 Picasso

2014 Citroen Grand C4 Picasso Deals

Surprisingly, Citroen delayed the arrival of the C4 Grand Picasso – the C4 Picasso's considerably bigger relative – by six months. Now it's here, however, the expectation is that it will fly out showrooms. The seven-seater nails the family transporter brief, with plenty of space in all three rows, a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and, in many models, excellent extra-urban fuel economy for such a heavy car. Prices start at £19,200 and the most frugal model – the e-HDI 90 Airdream – returns an almost incredible 74.3mpg while emitting just 98g/km CO2. The more powerful e-HDI 115(hp) is expected to make up the bulk of sales and still returns more than 70mpg. Top-spec Grand Picassos come with a 156bhp turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol.

As with the smaller C4 Picasso, the Grand Picasso offers a hugely spacious interior with class-leading visibility. Car-sickness should be a thing of the past. With the back seats up, however, boot space is compromised, although when stowed more than 630 litres capacity is available. All models come with alloy wheels and a six-speaker sound system (with a USB port for iPods).

Mercedes-Benz GLA

2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA Deals

On sale in February from £25,850, the new Mercedes-Benz GLA marks the company's entry into the ever-growing compact SUV market. Premium rivals will include the hugely successful Range Rover Evoque as well as the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. Owners of the similarly styled A-Class will be familiar with the GLA engine lineup, which starts with the 136bhp diesel GLA 200 CDI, returning a combined 62.8mpg when equipped with Mercedes' smooth seven-speed double-clutch transmission (a £1,450 option). Although a  355bhp AMG version will be offered – the GLA45 AMG – for most buyers the top of the range is represented by the four-wheel drive GLA 250 4MATIC, which comes with a 208bhp petrol engine and starts at £29,910. As with the A-Class, allow enough for a pricey options list.

Mercedes anticipate that the majority of GLA sales will be diesel-engineed models with four-wheel drive. That's hardly surprising given the UK's preference for all-wheel drive in our changeable conditions. Buyers should, however, consider whether money saved by opting for a front-wheel drive model could be better spent on options.

Peugeot 308

2014 Peugeot 308 Deals

The new Peugeot 308, examples of which are now being delivered, represents the French company's effort to upmarket and challenge more premium brands. As such, prices start at a higher-than-expected £14,495, although for this 'Access' trim Peugeot includes air-conditioning, cruise control, DAB radio and Bluetooth as standard. 'Active', 'Allure' and top-spec 'Feline' trim will also be available, with the latter starting at £20,995 and including 18-inch alloy wheels, Alcantara-trimmed sport seats, a panoramic glass roof and adaptive cruise control.'Active'-spec cars will come with a 9.7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an electronic handbrake, rear parking sensors and satellite navigation as standard.

Diesel engines have always been a strong point for French manufacturers, and the 308 will come with an ultra-frugal 1.6-litre BlueHDI 120 that returns a combined 72mpg and emits just 82g/km of CO2. Impressively for a non-hybrid, that's nearly enough to exempt it from the London congestion charge, but not quite. Further up the range, the similarly smooth 1.6-litre e-HDI 115bhp is likely to be the best seller, and in 'Allure' trim.
