Ford background and Ford deals newsFord’s Dagenham plant in the UK is not only ISO 14001 certified, but also recycles 85% of annual waste, with the remainder going into landfills. Their Dagenham factory is also 100% wind-powered by two 120m tall wind turbines. Ford produces a range of environmentally friendly EcoBoost-engined models, including an ultra-clean three-cylinder petrol engine with the potential for considerable performance with very low emissions. The company also makes a range of hybrid vehicles.
Ford Motor Company was founded by Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit on June 16, 1903. Henry Ford’s genius was to recognise that mass production of simple, reliable cars could make motoring affordable for almost everyone. Inspired by this knowledge, Ford invented the moving assembly line in production which effectively changed society forever. The Ford Model-T was the first such volume produced car. It can be said that Ford has made more than a little contribution to the way America lives and travels today. The company introduced methods for large-scale manufacturing of cars and consequently large-scale management of an industrial workforce. It did this by using elaborately engineered manufacturing sequences typified by moving assembly lines. By 1914, the method became well-known everywhere as Fordism.
Indeed, Ford's impact has been immense and there are not many places in the world where the Ford name is not known. It produces most of its vehicles for UK and European customers in different European countries. In 2007 though, despite its reach and reputation, Ford fell from second to third position in the top carmaker’s list in States, behind General Motors and Toyota. And based on 2007 world sales, the company slipped to fourth-position globally behind Volkswagen. Ford has always been very active in the motor sport, particularly in World Rally Championship in which it has participated from the tournament’s start. It took the 1979 manufacturers' title with the very efficiency Ford Escort RS1800. It has also won accolades in the world of endurance racing with the GT40 winning the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans four times in the 1960s. The GT40 is the first American car to ever win overall at Le Mans.
Ford sold 1,473,081 cars last year, making it the best-selling car manufacturer in the UK. Over 1,455,792 Ford Fiesta's have been sold in the UK since being released.
