Mitsubishi Motors is part of one of the largest industrial firms in the world. Part of the Mitsubishi keiretsu, the biggest industrial group in Japan, it was formed in 1970 from the automotive division of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Early association with Chrysler permitted to gain a reputation for reliability and longevity. The company has seven vehicle manufacturing facilities in Japan, The Netherlands, Philippines, Thailand, and the United States, besides 20 plants co-owned in partnership with others.

Since 2009, it has allied with PSA Peugeot Citroen and developed the Peugeot 4007 and Citroen C-Crosser sport utility vehicles based on the Mitsubishi Outlander. The car-maker has always attached a lot of importance in being competitive in motorsport, especially in circuit and off-road racing. Its debut in the sport was in a touring car racing in 1962 held to promote sales of its first post-war passenger car, the Mitsubishi 500 Super Deluxe. In WRC, Mitsubishi homologated the Lancer Evolution,winning the drivers title four years in succession under the hands of Finland's Tommi Makinen. The team also won the manufacturers’ championship in 1998. In total, they have won 34 WRC events since 1973. Mitsubishi is also the most successful manufacturer in the history of the Dakar Rally having won in 1992, '93, '97, '98, and from 2001-07 - an unprecedented seven consecutive victories and 12th overall with nine different drivers.

Mitsubishi has wholeheartedly embraced electric technology, and in 2013 launched the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV, the Outlander. The popular i-MiEV, which shares technology with the Peugeot iON, is also available in two versions now. In 2012, Mitsubishi set up a demonstration facility called ‘M-tech Labo’ at the Okazako Works of the company’s Nagoya plant. Equipped with solar panels, a wind power generator and rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles, charge stored in the EVs can be supplied to the adjacent office building, previewing energy sharing technology that could soon become widespread in smart grid-enabled cities around the world. At the 2013 New York International Motor Show, Mitsubishi debuted the 2014 Mirage.

Last year Mitsubishi sold 60,087 cars, making it the 23rd best-selling manufacturer in the UK. So far in 2016, the Outlander PHEV has been a very popular model, which achieves a fuel efficiency of over 150mpg!
