The number of new cars making their debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show continues to rise with Vauxhall announcing the Astra Sports Tourer.

Based on an all-new lightweight vehicle architecture with a new design, powertrains and in-car technology including OnStar and Apple CarPlay, the Brit-built Sports Tourer takes Vauxhall's design philosophy 'Sculptural Artistry meets Technical Precision' to the next level, so say the automotive manufacturers.

Its design focuses on providing passengers with much more space, with the driving enjoying 26mm of additional headroom, and passengers in the rear have 28mm more compared to the outgoing model.

For the first time on a Vauxhall, the tailgate can be opened without a touch or a remote control. In combination with 'Keyless Entry and Start' a simple small kicking motion will close the tailgate. Vauxhall say that the system can detect any obstruction and stops the mechanism in case of an emergency. Drivers still have the traditional option to open the tailgate by switch or via the key's remote control.

The model is up to 200kg lighter than its predecessor depending on the model and trim level thanks to the completely new vehicle architecture, that features a slightly arched sloping roofline giving the Sports Tourer a longer appearance.

Connectivity is stronger than ever with the Astra Sports Tourer thanks to the addition of the latest car technology withground-breaking connectivity software, OnStar. The Sports Tourer is also one of the first vehicles from a mainstream manufacturer to get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, available through a new version of the IntelliLink infotainment system.

The Frankfurt Motor Show runs between 17 and 27 September, with public days taking place from the Saturday 19 September.
