“After 3 weeks and 1700miles, I have been fairly impressed with the A4 Avant, In the S line form, it is a very good looking car. Where this car excels in my opinion is it's refinement, ride and most of all, the handling. Quattro is superb and the cliche 'it handles like it's on rails' is one that I would quote. Performance is good if not blistering buy then I have just swapped from a BMW 335d which was a rocket - not really a fair comparison though! Interior design is spot on, better looking than BMW although I wuld say BMW does have a slightly more solid feel to the build. My biggest bugbear at this time is the car's fuel economy. Even with reasonable driving and on long distances, I am unable to achieve anything like the combined economy figures quoted. To put into perspective with my driving style, I regularly exceeded my previous BMW quoted figures. I hope this improves over time as the engine 'loosens up', but I doubt it will be significant enough to achieve quoted figures - if I had known the outcome I would have considered the diesel variants more seriously.”

Considering that a recent survey of the British public concluded that Audi is one of the coolest brands around, the A4 is guaranteed to be a big seller - and whilst the current model certainly preserves the character of its predecessor, it also freshens up the styling in a bid to keep up with BMW’s latest 3 series. The shortcomings of the former model centred on the chassis, which never matched up to that of BMW’s offering, and also the limited rear legroom, both of which have been addressed with a new suspension setup, stiffer chassis and revised steering – combined with a longer wheelbase which allows for more space for passengers in the back.

Not content to stop there, Audi has introduced an array of excellent new engines to the line-up (with strong diesels), and the DSG gearbox which appears across the VW Group is fantastic: it smoothes out the gear change and even speeds it up, although it’s likely to slow down the delivery date with longer lead times from the factory.

Even though Audi’s Bavarian rivals still offer a slightly better drive, the A4 trumps them on sheer class – the interior has moved the game on several notches – and the famous four rings appear to be the badge to be to be seen with. Negotiating discounts with a dealer is therefore bound to be hard work, although AutoeBid will naturally find you an Audi main dealer with at least 10% off the price.
