Not one to leave any market unexplored, Volkswagen have come up with a supermini that offers a fairly sophisticated package. The emphasis is on safety and security, although in fact much of this is just hype: the basic models only come with front airbags and ABS, which falls short of the Renault Clio's roster of equipment. However the Polo is a comfortable cruiser on the motorway as well as about town - and it's well built with good refinement. The engines are strong and plucked from the excellent VW group line-up, offering great economy and reliability; all of them have enough power to keep things relaxed. The Polo doesn't offer the most involving drive but it is always comfortable with a soft ride in comparison to its sporty sister, the SEAT Ibiza. The discounts are strong on the Polo: you can purchase brand new and UK main dealer supplied in the reverse auction.
