Volvo XC90

If your mother, mum, or mam were to be a car, she's most likely to be one of the safest on the roads. Fitted with a number of safety kit that will prevent a crash or protect occupants in an accident, it's likely they'd be either a Infiniti Q30, Jaguar XE, or Volvo XC90, all of which were named the safest cars tested by Euro NCAP in 2015 in the family hatchback, family saloon, and large SUV class respectively. In fact, the Volvo XC90 was named the overall winner by Euro NCAP, who praised Volvo's commitment to safety.

If your dad is one of those that like to have the best on the market, then there's only one on the market that perfectly suits them, and it has to be the overall winner at the UK Car of the Year Awards 2016: the Mazda MX-5. The MX-5 is a two-seater, sporty convertible that is very enjoyable to drive, with efficient engines and wonderful handling. That's not all though, the MX-5 offers fatherly qualities such as "exceptional pedestrian protection", according to Euro NCAP.

The kids

New Family Cars

Skoda Citigo

A child passing their driving test is meeting with both joy and worry by parents, and with the buyer of their first car most likely to be the mother and father, safety features and running costs are key. Keeping insurance costs for young drivers is a tough task, but one parents do best.  Cars in insurance group 1 include the Kia Rio, SEAT Mii, and Skoda Citigo, and the bonus with these is that they all have the important Euro NCAP five stars for safety.

Babies and toddlers

New Family Cars

Skoda Yeti

They may not be old enough to drive, but babies go a long way to deciding which car the mother and father may drive. Push chairs, car seats and a boot load of toys and supplies mean that a space along with safety are the main attributions to look for when buying a car for a baby or toddler. The car market isn't short on these types, which is good news for all mums. In fact, popular models such as the Skoda Yeti, Nissan Qashqai and Mazda CX-5 are ideal cars for new mums and big families.
