The Volkswagen Golf R400 will be racing onto production lines towards the end of the year, but it the hot hatchback may be worth waiting for.
Volkswagen will be putting the R400 at the top of the Golf range, with its specially designed version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that is fitted into the standard Golf R.

The reason behind the '400' in the title is because that engine can produce a huge 400bhp as a result of a large turbocharge. Previously at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show, this engine powered the concept car from 0-62mph in a staggering 3.9 seconds.
Those figures will be putting the fears up some of the R400's main rivals such as the Renaultsport Megane 265, SEAT Leon Cupra, Honda CIVIC Type R and the Audi RS3
The Golf R400 looks a whole lot meaner compared to the standard Golf R. It has flared wheel arches making it 40mm wider, and a dual-element roof-mounted spoiler.
The quad exhausts that feature on the Golf R have been replaced with a large pair of pipes that sit centrally instead, and the front bumper now features ducts that help with cooling.

Not much detail about the interior of the Golf R400 has been released, but the four-wheel drive system and six-speed DSG automatic gearbox used in the Golf R will continue to be used in this speedier version.
